SOE LEVEL 1

INTRODUCTION TO INTERMEDIATE
CREATIVE MIXING

COURSE OVERVIEW

  • Review of all basic scratches. (Baby/Stab/Release/Cut/Chirp)
  • Introduction to single/double “click” flare techniques and variations.
  • Introduction/review “Twiddle flare and “Crab” scratch.
  • Snare chasing/shadow.
  • Advanced chirp scratch techniques. (accents/“switching gears”)
  • Introduction to executing a beat juggle live in the mix.
  • Introduction to the “double up” juggle pattern.
  • Emphasis on 2 and 4 bar scratch combination patterns.
  • In depth overview of Serato DJ and its various functions as well as
    industry standard performance mixers.
  • Live remixing “on the fly”.
  • Introduction to finger drumming and "on the fly" looping.
  • Learn to apply the above techniques in a real time mix scenario for final 15 minute final performance.

INTRODUCTION TO ADVANCED
CREATIVE MIXING

COURSE OVERVIEW

  • Review and practice all previously studied scratch techniques
    from level 1 with two and four bar patterns.
  • Baby (advanced) - Stab (advanced) - Chirp (advanced) - Scribble (advanced) -
    Flare (single/double click) - Crab - Twiddle/Twiddle Flare
  • Emphasis on combining the above techniques into advanced combinations
  • Introduction to Boomerang, Autobahn and other techniques
    placing emphasis on platter control, accuracy and timing.
  • Utilizing the “tools on your decks” (various sounds) in a live non rehearsed mix scenario
    to execute advanced scratch/juggle/performance techniques.
  • Scratching on acapella phrases and syllables in practice and live mix situations.
  • Introduction to “strobing” and “breakdown” techniques. Emphasis on how to execute these in a “performance”/“battle scenario.
  • Introduction to using different “clock” positions on the label with the sticker/cue point to execute advanced juggle patterns. i.e.: creating new beats using hi-hats, snares and kick that don’t land on “THE ONE” within a single clock rotation.
  • Construction of two 6 minute battle routines. Students will use these routines
    to battle each other in the final project where there will be only one winner.

 

COURSE GOALS

After the 8 week term students will be able to apply all techniques learned in the course
to a "live mixing” or performance scenario. Additionally they will gain deeper understanding of how to be more creative with music “on the fly”and go far beyond just mixing songs.
